Amber essential oil bottlesAbout Zen HandsQuestions

It's all very well in having nice smelling oils but do they do anything other than smell nice?

Inherent therapeutic qualities of essential oils along with our physiological and emotional links to the sense of smell make it much easier to beat sleep problems. Lavender is just one of many oils that will make it so much easier to calm the mind.

How about the smell of the sea as you arrive for your holiday? We link scent to experiences and when we experience the same or similar scent our brain experiences similarPerfectPotionLogo unconscious mental states. These are unconscious because they come from our Amygdala - our primitive fight or flight brain. "Actions" arising from this part of the brain may have a vague sense attached to them but that is the best our conscious brain can do with this information. When we induce a state of relaxation in the Amygdala part of the brain we not only become relaxed but do so in a deeper more complete way. This easily leads to inbuilt healing mechanisms being triggered and reinforced.

Aromatherapy uses this link to help you heal and recover.

But my masseur already uses fragrant oils, what is the difference?

Don't be fooled by this. Fragrant oils and Essential oils is like comparing water and oil or chalk and cheese. Fragrant (synthetic) oils use perfume-like synthetic compounds (chemicals) to produce scents (volatile substances) that somewhat fool our sense of smell. They are made from petroleum and have no biochemical similarity to the plants nor their concentrates and as such have no healing properties whatsoever. On the contrary being synthetic compounds they may very well be detrimental in much the same way chemicals often are. Additionally they are cheap and often combined with low quality oils.

Given that our skin is highly absorbent and our largest organ why would you want to add synthetic chemicals and low quality often processed oils to your body? Aren't you seeking to improve your health?

There is a 70% chance that the fragranced ie synthetic (unnatural) oils used contain hormone disrupting agents. Hormones are like voice communications within our body. What would happen to a community should their voice communications be randomly disrupted? Chaos and dysfunction are highly likely. This is the same within our bodies where these disruptors such as bps and phalates there is a very likely chance that testosterone production witting mothers and foetuses can be disrupted. With 80% of the ever multiplying synthetic compounds in plastics, fabrics, packagings, paints, cosmetics etc have not been tested or studied for adverse human effects - in the end a return to basics is the way forward.

Once you smell real oils extracted from selected plants because of thousands of years of observed and documented health benefits the difference will be obvious.

You say you use them in Chinese medicine how do they work there?

Chinese medicine is based on very long term observations of thousands of compounds and their effects not just on the body but on specific illnesses. In Chinese Medicine the properties and qualities of essential oils are being applied to several existing systems of understanding. Currently one method of working is to translate the taste and thermal properties to actions as we understand foods to have. This system is mature and works but there are other systems being evaluated. This is emerging work but is showing great promise.
