In a Shiatsu treatment, a skilled therapist will use a number of techniques to treat you. In this page I will discuss the technique of Stretching.
Stretching refers to simply applying traction to a limb or an area of tissue such as the posterior spine. The picture to the left depicts traction applied to the legs but the stretch goes through the legs hips lower back and in some cases right up to the neck. It's a very powerful technique when used with skill and sensitivity.
Intensity can range from strong but more often than not firm is used and in this case it is the sensitivity and duration that is important. It is used to open joints activate channels and start the Qi flowing.
Stretching is frequently used in the legs, upper limbs, back and neck but may also be in the hip or the stomach areas of the body. It is not restricted to those areas and can be used almost anywhere.
As you can see it removes or opposes the forces typically applied by gravity and hence feels releasing on joints and muscles and is enjoyable. Int the Chinese medicine framework it is used to open a channel that has stagnation or blockages. This technique is used in conjunction with many others as part of a greater shiatsu treatment.
