About Zen HandsResolving Headaches

Treatment of headaches and migraines via Shiatsu. Shiatsu is a deep body of work, a synthesis of deep energetic methods combined with the theory and practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Using finger pressure, heat, vacuum and lineaments on acupoints (Tsubo's) and specific stretches, Shiatsu balances the circulation of energy (Qi) and blood in your body thus controlling rising heat, stagnation and other factors. It is Face Treatmentincredibly calming for the body and it's nervous system.

Many headaches are caused by tightness of shoulder and neck muscles. The neck has many meridians flowing through it and thus can be problematic when imbalances do arrise.

Liver and Gall Bladder meridian channels run deep in the neck structures and sides of head. The organs and associated channels are prone to blockages and resulting stagnation which over time progresses to pathological heat. The problem is, heat likes to rise which aggravates the mind. Picture that red face we commonly see when a person is angry or has a migraine.

It is usually brought about by emotions that have been "stuck" or unresolved blocking the flow of Qi. Anger is another common irritant as is apathy. Perhaps underlying the anger is a case of their goals or plan is being somehow thwarted and they feel stuck. They just can't see the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel". Being in a unsatisfying job is an example of one such situation. You'd like to move on but for a variety of reasons just can't. All this pressure results in heat which rises upwards leading to problems in the neck and head. The headaches in this case can be acute or sharp.

Foods that are spicy-hot, greasy eaten too frequently can result in phlegm which exacerbates or gives rise to these situations bringing a predisposition to a head giving rise to headaches and migraines.

You may be eating all the right foods but be affected by lack of physical movement. Sedentary or desk bound life frequently gives rise to what is known in Chinese medicine as stagnation. Our bodies comprise of high percentage of fluids. These fluids, blood, lymph and foods we ingest need to physically move through digestive tracts and vessels. Blood needs to flow not just through the central systems but also to the extremities. This needs movement to happen well. It also needs movement to be a constant part of our waking life not just a half an hour walk or a quick circuit class in the gym altho these do help. We were designed to move. When this movement is limited or largely absent, stagnation frequently sets in giving rise to congestion in organs and feelings of being stuck.

Shiatsu works with these systems, softening muscles and freeing structures, moving fluids and foods, generally helping a person work through their condition and or situation. It is very difficult so see a solution to a problem when we are effected by strong emotions. Once these are cleared, options that have always been there, become visible. Reactions are seen as just that and you rise above the tumult of emotion based waves. It is common for people to have an "aha" moment and see with clarity where they were stuck and see the path out of any given situation.

One last thought, ease up on the coffee, caffeine causes much heat and really isn't your friend.
